The architect didn't allow room for concrete board between cabinet and basin. Tile won't bond for long on painted wood so it had to be addressed.
The carpenter cut grooves with a circular saw about 1" apart and I took my grinder with 60 grit paper and removed the paint.
A coat of Kerabond / Keralastic was flat-trowelled on the plywood cabinet panel and allowed to dry overnight.
Tile can be safely installed on cabinet plywood because now you are bonding to dried mortar that is already bonded. Travertine tile is easly bullnosed for finish edges.
